Location-based notifications are a unique feature of Apple Wallet that lets you show a message on the customer's lock screen when they're near one of your store locations.

Location-based notifications only work on Apple Wallet. Android (Google Wallet) does not support this feature.

How They Work

These notifications are different from regular push notifications — they don't make any sound or vibration. Their power lies in appearing silently on the lock screen, making it easy for the customer to open their wallet pass when they're nearby.

  • Notifications appear when the customer is about 70-80 meters away from the location (when "Precise Location" is turned on)
  • They work offline — once the campaign is on the device, no internet connection is needed
  • You can create as many locations as you want, each with its own message

Setting Up Location Campaigns

1

Create your locations

Add the physical locations where you want notifications to trigger. For each location, write the text you want customers to see when they're nearby.

2

Group locations into campaigns

Organize your locations into campaigns to target specific customer segments. You can have multiple campaigns running at the same time.

3

Choose your audience

Pick which customer segments should receive each location-based campaign.

Use location-based notifications to promote in-store exclusives, show promo codes near your shops, or create engagement games that drive foot traffic.

Troubleshooting

Why isn't the location notification showing up?

There are a few things to check:

  1. Automatic Updates must be turned on — Open the wallet pass, tap the three dots (or info icon) at the top, and make sure "Automatic Updates" is on
  2. Suggest on Lock Screen must be turned on — In the same settings area, look for "Suggest on Lock Screen" and make sure it's on
  3. Location access for Wallet — Go to the device's Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Wallet and make sure location access is allowed
iOS location services settings for Wallet
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Wallet

What happens if the customer doesn't have internet access?

Location-based notifications don't need an internet connection. Once the campaign is on the device, the wallet will trigger notifications based on location alone — completely offline.
