The VTAP100-PRO-BW is the NFC reader used with JeriCommerce to identify customers at your store by tapping their loyalty card. Before it can work, you need to connect it to your store's WiFi network.

This guide walks you through the full setup, from plugging it in to getting it online, and covers the most common issues you might run into.

The VTAP reader only works with 2.4 GHz WiFi networks. It does not support 5 GHz. If your router broadcasts both, make sure you connect the reader to the 2.4 GHz network.

What you need

  • A VTAP100-PRO-BW NFC reader (purchased separately from VTAP / DotOrigin)
  • A power source (USB cable and adapter, or USB port on a computer)
  • A phone or laptop to set up the WiFi
  • Your store's WiFi network name and password (2.4 GHz)

Understanding the LED lights

Before starting, here's what the lights on your VTAP reader mean:

LED light What it means
Steady blue Connected to the internet and working correctly
Blue flashing every 1 second The reader is in Hotspot Mode, ready for WiFi setup
Red flashing fast (every 1 second) Cannot find or connect to the WiFi network
Red flashing slow (3 seconds on, 3 seconds off) Connected to WiFi but cannot reach the internet
Steady red (more than 5 minutes) Something is wrong — see the troubleshooting section

First-time WiFi setup

1

Plug in the reader

Connect the VTAP reader to a power source using the USB cable. Wait about 10 seconds for it to start up. The red LED will start flashing — this is normal.

2

Wait for Hotspot Mode

After about 3 minutes, the LED changes from red to a blue flash every 1 second. This means the reader has created its own temporary WiFi network that you can connect to from your phone or laptop.

3

Find the reader's serial number

Flip the reader over and find the serial number on the sticker (for example, CC203559). You'll need this to identify the reader's WiFi network.

4

Connect to the reader's hotspot

On your phone or laptop, open WiFi settings and look for a network called [serial number] Setup (for example, CC203559 Setup). Connect using the password passreader.

5

Open the setup page

A setup page should open automatically. If it doesn't, open a browser and go to http://192.168.4.1.

6

Choose your store's WiFi and join

On the setup page, pick your store's WiFi network from the list, enter the password, and press Join.

7

Confirm the connection

Your phone will disconnect from the reader's hotspot — that's expected. Watch the LED on the reader: once it turns steady blue, the reader is connected and ready to use.

After connecting, the reader automatically registers with VTAP Cloud. Your JeriCommerce account takes care of the rest — no extra setup needed.

How to change the WiFi network

If you need to connect the reader to a different WiFi network (for example, after changing your router or moving to a new location):

1

Disconnect from the current network

Unplug the reader and plug it back in. If the previous WiFi network is no longer available, the reader will automatically enter Hotspot Mode after 3 minutes (blue flash every 1 second).

2

Follow the setup steps again

Once the reader is in Hotspot Mode, follow the same steps from First-time WiFi setup starting at Step 3.

If the reader is still connected to the old WiFi network and you want to switch, you can also change the WiFi settings remotely through the VTAP Cloud platform — ask JeriCommerce support for help with this.

Using a phone hotspot (temporary setup)

If your store's WiFi is down or you need a quick temporary connection, you can share your phone's mobile data:

1. Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot 2. Turn on Allow Others to Join 3. Turn on Maximize Compatibility — this is important because it forces the hotspot to use 2.4 GHz 4. Note the WiFi password shown on the screen 5. Follow the regular WiFi setup steps using the hotspot name and password
1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot 2. Make sure the band is set to 2.4 GHz (this varies by phone model — look for "Band" or "AP Band" in the hotspot settings) 3. Note the network name and password 4. Follow the regular WiFi setup steps using the hotspot name and password

Frequently asked questions

The red LED is flashing fast (every 1 second) and won't stop
This means the reader can't find your WiFi network. Check these things:

  • Is your WiFi on 2.4 GHz? The reader does not work with 5 GHz networks. Many modern routers broadcast both — make sure you're connecting to the 2.4 GHz one.
  • Is the reader in range? Move it closer to your router and try again.
  • Did you type the password correctly? WiFi passwords are case-sensitive. Double-check for typos.
  • Is the network hidden? If so, you'll need to type the network name manually during setup.

Wait 3 minutes for the reader to enter Hotspot Mode (blue flashing), then set up the WiFi again.

The red LED is flashing slowly (3 seconds on, 3 seconds off)
The reader found your WiFi network but can't reach the internet. This usually means:

  • Your router has internet issues — check if other devices can browse the web
  • A firewall or network filter is blocking the reader — ask your IT team to allow outbound HTTPS traffic (port 443) to vtap.dotorigin.cloud
  • The router needs a restart — unplug your router for 30 seconds and plug it back in

The reader will automatically restart after 5 minutes in this state and try again.

The LED stays red for more than 5 minutes
Something is wrong with the connection. Try these steps in order:

  1. Unplug the reader and wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in
  2. Check your WiFi — make sure other devices can connect and access the internet
  3. Move the reader closer to the router
  4. Set up the WiFi again — wait for Hotspot Mode and go through the setup steps

If it still doesn't work, contact JeriCommerce support.

I can't find the reader's hotspot network on my phone
Try these fixes:

  • Wait longer — there can be a 1-2 minute delay after the blue flashing starts before the hotspot appears
  • Refresh your WiFi list — turn WiFi off and on again on your phone
  • Move closer — hold your phone right next to the reader
  • Disconnect from other networks — turn off auto-connect on your phone so it doesn't jump to another network
  • Check the serial number — make sure you're looking for the right network name (it should be [serial number] Setup)

The setup page at 192.168.4.1 doesn't load
If the browser shows an error:

  • Make sure you're connected to the reader's hotspot — not your regular WiFi
  • Try typing the full address: http://192.168.4.1 (not https)
  • Disable mobile data on your phone — some phones prefer mobile data over WiFi when the WiFi has no internet
  • Try a different browser — sometimes the default browser causes issues

My WiFi network doesn't show up in the list during setup
- Check if the network is 2.4 GHz — 5 GHz networks won't appear - Is the network hidden? Type the name manually in the setup page - Is the router too far away? Move the reader closer and refresh the list - Too many networks? In crowded areas, some networks might not show up right away. Wait a moment and refresh.

The reader was working but suddenly went offline
If the reader had a steady blue LED and now shows red:

  • Did the WiFi password change? You'll need to set up the WiFi again
  • Did the router restart? The reader should reconnect automatically in a few minutes
  • Is the internet down? Check with your internet provider
  • Power cycle the reader — unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in

The reader tries to reconnect automatically, so give it a few minutes before going through the full setup again.

Can I connect multiple readers to the same WiFi?
Yes. Each reader connects independently to your WiFi network. Just set up each one following the same steps. They don't interfere with each other.

The steady blue LED flickers briefly every 30 seconds — is that normal?
Yes, that's perfectly normal. The brief flicker is a "heartbeat" signal — it means the reader is actively communicating with the cloud and everything is working correctly.

Who do I contact if nothing works?
If you've tried all the troubleshooting steps and the reader still won't connect:

  1. Contact JeriCommerce support — we can check the reader's status from our side and help you remotely
  2. VTAP manufacturer support — for hardware issues, email vtap-support@dotorigin.com
